Golden River Sumeswari in Bangladesh

Golden River Sumeswari is at Birishiri of Durgapur upozila in Netrakona district of Bangladesh. There are many things to attract the visitors in Birishiri, Durgapur. But the golden river Sumeswari, beauty of Garo hills, colors of the hills of China clay are exceptional.

While going to visit there, just before the upozila headquarters of Durgapur, it is Birishiri. In Birishiri, there is Birishiri Tribal Cultural Academy. A little bit away, there is a bridge near Durgapur upozila headquarters. From that bridge, stare at left. Yes! That is Sumeswari River calling you. In rainy season, this river gets her youth. In winter, water decreases. But at that time field of golden color sands are seen in both side of the river. Meghalaya Hills in India is also seen slightly shadowy in long distance. Standing on that bridge, you can see all these things.

To visit attractive places in Durgapur and Birishiri, you may hire a motorbike or rickshaw. Then you may go to the bank of the river Sumeswari. There, the golden sands are waiting to charm you. It is notable that these sands are not only charming to see but also of high quality to make buildings. So aggression of machine is so high now a days there. Coal and stones also come through this river. In winter, lots of laborers work here from morning to evening to collect them. At that time, the water of that river becomes very clear and greenish in color. While crossing the river, the bottom of the river glittering with the ray of light in various designs is seen.

Hills of china clay are another attraction of Birishiri. After crossing the river, it takes around half an hour by motorbike to go to those hills. Those hills are of amazing colors i.e. pink, red, violet, purple etc. From the pick of the hills, houses of tribal people are seen scattered here and there. These houses are of special style of construction.

From hills of china clay, you may go to Ranikong Mission. That mission is also on a hill. Church, convent etc. are in that mission. From that hill, to see the glittering golden river is very enchanting.

Once upon a time, Durgapur was the place of Sushang King. So this place is called Sushsng Durgapur. This place is also renowned for Comrade Moni Singh, leader of Tonk movement. Noted here that, In Durgapur there are residence of Garo, Hajong, Kotch tribes.

How to go Golden River Sumeswari in Bangladesh

Direct bus is available to go to Dhaka to Birishiri or Sushang Durgapur. You also may go to Mymensingh by bus or by intercity train and then to Birishiri by bus. Local train I s also available from Mymensingh to Jaria and then, from there, motorbike or auto rickshaw or rickshaw van is available to go to Birishiri. To roam inside Birishiri and Durgapur, you may hire motorbike or rickshaw.

You may visit Birishiri making Mymensingh as your base station. In that case you may stay in Mymensingh and many standard hotels and rest houses are available in Mymensingh. But if you wish to visit Birishiri taking enough time, you may stay in Birishiri also. In Birishiri, you may stay in the rest house of Tribal Cultural Academy or YMCA or YWCA. But in that case, you have to contact them prior to start for there.

On the way to Tangua hawor, you have to cross some small hawors also. There are little villages to and fro in those small hawors. While going to Tangua hawor, you may have a look in those villages. In rainy season, as the hawors become filled with water, those small villages look like isolated island in water. Most of the people of those villages are poor. But if you go to any village, the hospitality of those poor people will fascinate you. Different types of delicious fishes are available here. It is quite possible that most of you have never heard the names of most of the available fishes. You can manage to have test of fresh fishes here.

After travelling around 6 hours by engine boat starting from Shaheb Bari Ghat at Sunamganj, you may reach the portion of Tangua Hawor where the water is most clear. This portion is at Tekerghat, near the last border of Bangladesh. There you will have an opportunity to see natural garden or forest under water.

The beauty of Tangua hawor cannot be described in words. Beauty of endless blue clear water, lots of birds in the sky and water, swimming of fishes in flocks, the simplicity of the inhabitants of villages in hawor area, the life of fishermen, the children of water, natural garden under clear water etc. as a whole has a different language. Here the broadness of nature is found easily. These beauties broaden the mind of the visitors.

You may visit the hawor during full moon. In that case you certainly will have an unforgettable experience. The beauty of endless blue water of this hawor in the light of full moon will enchant you. The stars in the sky will accompany you to observe and enjoy the beauty.

You also may stay in boat at night. If so, then you can enjoy the scene during the sunset and sunrise staying at the middle of the Hawor and those will be a great experience for you as hawor looks so heavenly at those moments.

In winter, water of this hawor decreases. At that time this hawor is one of the mentionable destinations of around 200 types of foreign migrating birds. In rainy season and autumn, visitors come here to enjoy the reign of water with fishes and birds etc. But in winter, visitors come here to see the hawor full of migrating guest birds.

Tangua Hawor in Bangladesh

Tangua hawor is announced as Ecologically Critical Region by the government of Bangladesh in 1999 thinking of it's critical situation caused by over-exploitation of it's natural resources. In 2000, the Tangua hoar basin has been reported as Ramsar site, globally significant wetland. After that announcement, Bangladesh government is doing their best to preserve it's natural resources and considered various steps regarding protection of this wetland. Tangua haor performs a significant role in producing fish as a 'mother fishery' of Bangladesh.

How to go Tangua Hawor

Buses are available from Dhaka to Sunamganj. Then you are to go to Shaheb Bari Ghat (in front of the house of Hason Raja) by rickshaw or Auto rickshaw. From there you have to hire engine boat. Engine boats are available here. In this way it is possible to go Tangua Hawor up to November as the water decreases after that time. But in winter, Engine boats are not available from Shaheb Bari Ghat. At that time you will have to go to Tahirpur or Tekerghat by motorbike or auto rickshaw from Sunamganj.

Where to stay in Tangua Hawor

There is no arrangement to stay in Tangua Hawor. You may stay in Sunamganj if you have a plan of a short visit. But to enjoy properly, you will need more time. In that case you may stay in the govt. rest house in Tahirpur. You also may stay in boat at night. If you choose to stay in boat at night or you hire a boat for more time, you should purchase your necessary things and goods before starting from Sunamganj. The boatmen can manage cooking for you.

Srimangal Tea Garden

Srimangal is famous for tea garden. Most of the tea gardens of Bangladesh are in Moulovibazar and the major portion of them are in Srimangal. Usually tea leaves have been collected from May to October. At that time the gardens become green, vigorous, luxuriant, and diligent. So to enjoy the natural beauty of green tea garden and to observe the diligence of tea workers in the curves of hills and hillocks, that is the best time.

You may start visiting tea garden of Srimangal by seeing the sculpture named ‘Cha-Konna’ which means Daughter of Tea. This sculpture is of a young lady tea worker collecting tea leaves. This white sculpture situated on the entrance of Srimangal which attracts everybody. In front of that sculpture, there is Saatgaon tea garden with a large vast area. You may enjoy it also.

From there Srimangal is not so far. Leaving behind this little town, Srimangal, there is Bangladesh Tea Research Institute (BTRI), Finlay tea garden, BTRI tea garden, Tea Resort at Vanugach, Zerin tea garden etc. There is another tea garden named Nurjahan Tea Estate and some other tea gardens near Lawachora.

Komolganj, another upozila of Moulovibazar, is 12 kilometers away from Srimangal and on the way there is Lawachora National Garden/Forest. After 5 kilometers from Komolganj there is Madhobpur Lake. This lake is in a tea garden surrounded by hillocks. You may go to Madhobpur Lake seeing tea gardens. In this case you have to hire a jeep.

From Madhobpur Lake, a road goes to Dholai border. Up to that border of Bangladesh, there are only tea gardens at the both side of the road. At the border there is a BGB post. Beside that post there is the Memorial of Birsreshtho Hamidur Rahman. You may return Srimangal seeing tea gardens through another way.

After the tour, you may have a cup of ‘Seven Colored Tea’ in Nilkantha Kebin. In Srimangal there is a branch of Nilkantha Kebin beside the BGB headquarter.

Necessary Information for Srimangal Tea Garden

You may enjoy the natural beauty of tea gardens while traveling by roads through the gardens. But if you want to enter into a garden, you have to take permission from the authority of the respective garden. To visit inside the gardens you will need to hire a jeep.

You may hire a jeep from the base station you stay or from Srimangal. In Srimangal, jeeps are available to hire and the drivers of those jeeps are familiar to the tea gardens.

There are many places to stay at Srimangal. Hotels, Motels, Resorts and Rest Houses are available there. Rest Houses in various tea gardens and Resorts in wonderful locations having wonderful facilities in Srimangal will make your tour more comfortable and your visit will be more memorable with excellent experience. Swamp Forest Ratargul

Ratargul Swamp Forest the another hidden beauty of Bangladesh. A large forest in wetland. A plenty of inundated trees are standing here in rows. This forest is so dense that even the sunlight can not enter the inner side of the forest through the leaves to touch the water. Many people say that it is the Amazon of Bangladesh. Locally this forest is called the Sundarbans of Bangladesh. It’s original name is Ratargul. Various wild animals and birds live here and wander from branch to branch of trees. Rainy season and just after rainy season (from July to October) is the best time to visit Ratargul.

Ratargul is about 26 kilometers from Sylhet. This forest is situated at Guainghat upozila in Sylhet district. In Sylhet range-2 under Sylhet forest department, there is a wetland which area is about 30 thousand 3 hundred and 25 acres. In that wetland, Ratargul forest is in 5 hundred and 4 acres. At the time of rainy season the whole wetland goes under water and in winter it almost dry up.

Ratargul is a natural forest. The notable plants of this forest are Hijal, Koroch, Borun, Kadam, Arjun, Jalibet, Mutta etc. about 25 water friendly species. Major portion of supply of Mutta which is the main raw material of Shital pati, heritage of Sylhet, comes from this forest.

Various types of birds are here; such as Kingfisher (Machranga), Dove (Ghughu), many kinds of Crane or Heron (Bok), Water fowl (Pankowri), Folktailed Shrike (Finga), Teal (Balihash) etc. Notable animals of this forest are monkey, Otter, Squirrel, Mechobagh etc. Various types of reptile and snakes are also available here. In 1973, Forest department of Bangladesh declared this forest area as Sanctuary for wild life.

The natural beauty of Ratargul can not be expressed in few words in writing. This is only to enjoy. And to enjoy the beauty properly, it is a must to go there. The deeper you go, the higher the density of trees. In many places sunlight doesn’t enter. If it doesn’t rain one or two days, the water becomes very clear. At that time the reflection of green forest looks like another forest under that forest. While visiting Ratargul, journey by boat is an extra enjoyment to the visitors.

How to go Ratargul Swamp Forest

If you come from abroad, you need to come to Bangladesh firstly. There is an international and domestic Airport in Sylhet. So, you may come to Sylhet, Bangladesh directly. Otherwise you may come to Bangladesh through Dhaka and Chittagong. And then, from Dhaka or Chittagong you may come Sylhet by road, railway and air.

Bus service is available from Dhaka. AC buses i.e. Greenline, Shohag, Saudia, Ena transports etc. and non AC buses i.e. Shamoly, Hanif enterprize, Uniqe service, Saudia, Mamun transport, Ena transport etc. from Dhaka to Sylhet starts from Fakirapul, Saidabad, Kamalapur, Mohakhali in Dhaka city. Trains from Dhaka to Sylhet starts from Kamalapur and you may avail train from Kamalapur Railway station or Airport Railway station. Domestic flights are available from Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka to M A G Osmani International Airport, Sylhet. From Chittagong, bus service and train service are available to go to Sylhet. You also may come from Chittagong to Sylhet by air through Dhaka. Sylhet is also well connected with other major cities by road and railway.

From Sylhet, it is possible to go to Ratargul through various ways. But the easiest way is trough Khadim tea garden & Khadimnagar national garden. This way takes the minimum time to go to Ratargul from Sylhet. You may hire a CNG auto rickshaw or a jeep and go to a place named Shringi Bridge. From there you are to enter Ratargul forest by small boat.

You also may go to Ratargul forest from Guainghat. In this case, you are to go to Guainghat Bazar through Sylhet-Jaflong road. From Guainghat bazar you may hire a boat and go to Ratargul. If you go by this way, you will have an oppotunity to enjoy the excellent natural beauty of 'Shari' river in addition. But this way will take little bit more time and cost.
